THE BIOLOGICAL HUMAN
Wellness Tips for Body, Mind, & Spirit
“Body, mind, and spirit are one and each relies on the other for wellness.”
Traditional healthcare, traditional western medicine ignores this Trilogy and compartmentalizes rather than unifies the human ‘Being’. But when one area suffers, they all suffer — and in turn wellness eludes.
Are you someone who believes that personal peace is an illusion, something to wish for but cannot seem to attain? Is physical wellness transitory, coming and going like the ebb and flow of an ocean tide? Do you think of life as an inevitable creeping along towards destination death? Does ‘God’ seem like an esoteric myth?
Sound depressing?
It doesn’t have to be!
You might be wondering why this wellness blog is called the ‘biological human’ when biology is only one part of our trilogy. It is because it is the tangible part, the part that most of us readily identify with. However wellness depends on our ability to also incorporate positivity and spirituality into our vision of ourselves.
All too often I have seen people focused obsessively on their physical self and their given biology — focusing on the self that is separate from mind and spirit, the self they see as helpless and susceptible to decay. This common depressing view of life is further magnified by our culture and society. If it is true that we are what we think:
Should we focus on illness — we will have illness.
So I am compelled to help. To learn more about me, the nurse and the health care business strategist, please check my About page.
Having been in the health care industry for my entire career I was to a large degree a reluctant participant, not necessarily agreeing with the rush to surgery of some practitioners, or the quick scribbling out of a prescription at the first sign of a malady.
What has happened to prevention, patient education, and non-medical intervention? Mainstream medicine (undoubtedly driven by prescription drug companies, the insurance industry, and profitability) has sunken that ship.
What I did (and still do) believe in is calmness, assurance — and wellness.
Surgery and prescriptions each have their place, but where is that all-encompassing totality of what it means to be human – the body, the mind, and the spirit of who we are.
You see, our biology, despite being the most amazing technology on the planet, is not actually who we are. We are more than our biology — a skin-encapsulated bony skeleton dragging around a bag of protoplasm. It is our physical home, yes, while we are here on this three-dimensional planet, but it is not us in totality. It is merely our tool and a fantastic one at that while we are here.
Does this imply a belief in immortality, or a fatalistic approach to ‘life’? Do we just die and that’s it? Is immortality a comforting myth and nothing more?
Still feeling depressed? Don’t be.
Just change your understanding.
Most people would say ‘change your thinking’. I say, change your understanding. If you believe that death is the end of life then you most likely believe that your biology — your body — you — are no more than a brief flash of light on a planet that is billions of years old.
That seems rather short doesn’t it?
Most of what we know we were taught. Most of what we were taught we did not question. So all those ideas, all those thoughts that were not ours but other’s became our reality. Do life and death (body), beliefs systems (mind), and religion (soul or spirit) become an accident of birth?
They do, unless you do something to change your understanding.
Ah… and there’s the challenge.
It has been proven that everything is made up of energy (sub-atomic particles) — which are essentially — invisible. And energy cannot be destroyed, it can only be transformed.
Simply translated, nothing is ‘real’ as we see, hear, feel, smell, or taste it. These senses which are compelling, are restrictions. Many birds like the American Kestrel see infrared light as reflected by urine to hunt down prey. Dolphins and bats use sonar to find food and avoid obstacles. In the deepest part of the ocean, multitudes of creatures find each other to procreate and find food, yet there is a total absence of light.
We can’t do any of these things.
All of earth’s creatures have their own set of ‘senses’ that allow them to navigate within this three-dimensional world we live in. Should we believe our unique senses, what we hear from others, what we think we see — or should we question?
If our senses are merely restrictions for interpreting reality, and the particles which make us up are pure energy, and if energy cannot be created nor destroyed (The First Law of Thermodynamics) then the energy that is us has always been and must continue.
It is time we applied this physics lesson to our lives and to ourselves, as our minds and bodies are made up of matter and energy.
Energy — you can only be transformed.
Fear causes stress and stress causes physical symptoms and illnesses – and wellness eludes. So, logically speaking, we have just eliminated one of our deepest stresses and deepest fears. We do not die. We merely transform.
It might be into the unknown, but those who have come back from Near Death Experiences almost always say the same thing — they felt overwhelming love and peace before returning to their earth-bound lives.
Change your understanding, and fear-induced illnesses and anxieties associated with death disappear.
“Molecules dissolve and pass away, but consciousness survives the death of the matter on which it rides.” From The Way of the Wizard: Twenty Spiritual Lessons for Creating the Life You Want by Deepak Chopra.
If you have never heard of Deepak Chopra he is well worth following. Dr. Chopra is a Board Certified Physician in Internal Medicine, Endocrinology, and Metabolism and the author of over 80 books on integrative medicine and personal transformation. TIME magazine has described Dr. Chopra as “one of the top 100 heroes and icons of the century.” The World Post and The Huffington Post global internet survey ranked Dr. Chopra #40 influential thinker in the world and #1 in Medicine.
